After Botox: Day-by-Day Care to Protect Results in the First Week
By Plastic Surgery Art and Science Institute: Dr. David Sahar, MD | October 10, 2026
The most important rule after Botox is simple: don’t rub, massage, or “work in” the areas we treated for the first 24 to 48 hours. Botox is placed with a fine needle and precise markings, and early pressure, heat, and heavy sweating can interfere with how it settles. If you’re in Beverly Hills and heading back out into the sun, errands, or meetings, this one habit protects your result more than any product ever will.
Quick reality check: Botox is low downtime, but it’s not no-care. A few small choices in the first week usually make the difference between “nice” and “exactly what I wanted.” I’m appointment-only, I keep the experience discreet, and I see plenty of people who want predictable, event-ready results in Downtown Beverly Hills and the Golden Triangle.
First 24 to 48 hours after Botox: the rules that actually matter
Think of the first day as “set and protect.” You don’t need to baby your skin, but you do need to avoid the big disruptors.
Do this today
- Stay upright for 4 hours after your injections. Don’t lie flat, and skip yoga inversions.
- Keep your face clean, and be gentle when you wash. Pat, don’t scrub.
- If you have a little swelling or tenderness at injection points, a cool compress helps. Use light pressure only.
- Plan for calm movement, not a workout. A normal walk is fine.
Avoid for 24 hours: rubbing or massaging treated areas, strenuous exercise, alcohol, hot tubs/saunas, and high heat. In Beverly Hills weather, heat and sweat add up fast, so give yourself that first day to cool it down.
A note on bruising: bruises can happen any time we use a needle, even with a careful technique. If you’re prone to bruising, the first 48 hours is when you want to be extra gentle. Also, don’t stop prescribed medications unless the doctor who prescribed them told you to. If you’re unsure what’s safe for you, ask us before you change anything.
Days 2 to 7: what to avoid so you don’t “chase” the result
Most people feel totally normal after Botox. That’s great, but it’s also why people accidentally sabotage their outcome. Here’s what I want you thinking about all week.
Hold off on these for two weeks
- Facials and facial massage
- Laser and energy-based treatments on the area
- Aggressive exfoliation or devices that pull on the skin
Try to avoid this week
- Dental work when you can reschedule it. A long appointment with your mouth open can strain the area, especially after masseter Botox or jaw Botox.
- Vigorous sweating sessions and prolonged heat exposure. If you’re shopping and walking around the Golden Triangle, keep water on you and choose shade when you can.
- Pressing your face into a massage table cradle or anything that applies sustained pressure to treated areas.
Event timing in Downtown Beverly Hills: If you have a major dinner, wedding, or photo-heavy event planned around Rodeo Drive or nearby venues, schedule Botox 1 to 2 weeks ahead. Results usually start in 24 to 48 hours, but the best, settled look is typically closer to day 10 to 14.
Products and daily habits that keep Botox looking clean
After Botox, simple skincare wins. Your goal is calm skin and consistent sun protection. Skip anything that makes you red, hot, or inflamed.
- Gentle cleanser + lukewarm water for the first couple of days. If you’re tugging, it’s too much.
- Mineral sunscreen is a great option if you’re sensitive or you flushed easily after injections. Reapply if you’re outside.
- Cold compress for small bumps or tenderness. Think 5 to 10 minutes at a time.
- Head elevated for sleep the first night if you swell easily. It’s a small thing that often helps.
If you had Botox for a functional concern, like excessive underarm sweating or Botox for migraines, the aftercare is still mostly about avoiding heat, heavy exertion, and pressure right away. For masseter Botox and jaw Botox in particular, don’t test-drive the result by clenching or chewing gum nonstop. Let it settle.
When to reach out to me after Botox (and when to call right away)
I’d rather you ask early than sit at home worrying. My practice runs on clear communication and follow-up, and patients routinely mention feeling safe and cared for by the team. If something feels off, we take it seriously and we respond.
Usually normal
- Mild swelling or redness at injection points
- Small bruises that fade over a few days
- A mild headache the day of treatment
Call us immediately
- Severe pain or pain that keeps escalating
- Vision changes
- Spreading bruising or bruising that concerns you
- Unexpected asymmetry, including a drooping eyelid that doesn’t start improving
Results build. You’ll often start noticing changes in 24 to 48 hours, with full effect at 1 to 2 weeks. If you want your result checked, I’m happy to see you around the two-week mark. That visit is also a good time to talk through your next round, especially if you’re coordinating around travel into Beverly Hills from West Hollywood, Los Angeles, Culver City, Santa Monica, or Bel Air.
A practical Botox plan for Beverly Hills schedules, parking, and privacy
A lot of my Botox patients are busy professionals or visitors staying nearby who want a predictable look with minimal disruption. If that’s you, plan Botox when you can keep the first 24 hours low-key. That means no hard workout, no sauna, no long facial appointment, and no “quick” intense heat exposure that turns into an hour outside.
I’m appointment-only, wheelchair accessible, LGBTQ friendly, and I keep things discreet. We also have free parking, we accept card payments, and we’ll help you choose timing that works for your calendar. The goal is simple: you leave, you get back to your day, and your result develops cleanly over the next week.
